Information About Belgian Hare Rabbits
Belgian Hare Description and Fast Facts
by Alicia Thompson,
Jahar Stud
" The Belgian Hare is a medium sized breed that resembles a hare or jack
rabbit. Though they are called "hares" they are actually true rabbits. They
originated in Belgium in the mid 1800s and rose in popularity when introduced
to England where the breed was quickly taken over by the British fanciers.
Then around 1900 the first hares were imported to the United States. The
introduction of hares in the US was a roaring success, and by the 1920s there
were more than 60,000 in Southern California alone. Hares were also selling
for astronomical prices. One grand champion buck sold for $5000 and many
others sold for over $1000. Remember this was in the 1920s! Then, as quickly
as they had rose to stardom, they faded into history. They are today one of
the rarest breeds and they are sadly disappearing. Hopefully something can be
done to stop their disappearance from the planet. We need new breeders to help
this wonderful breed.
