Description of The Silver rabbit:

The Silver Rabbit

by Ellyn Eddy, SilverStar Polis Rabbitry

What is a silver? you ask. Perhaps you know, but I am continually surprised at how few rabbit breeders know what a Silver is.  I think that if more people were exposed to the rare and beautiful "Sterling Breed" the Silver would become a lot more common sight.  They are very often confused with the silver fox, but there is a night and day difference between the two breeds.

But what is a silver? A silver is a small breed, weighing 4-7 pounds, average being 5-6.  They have medium-length type and bone.  Silvers have probably the shortest, snappiest fly-back coat you will ever see.  They are recognized in three varieties, Black, Brown, and Fawn.  The Brown is a chestnut.  On top of the black, brown, or fawn coat is even silver ticking, giving the breed a silvery look. They are not cute rabbits, but better described as looking "cool!"

Silvers are athletic and active rabbits.  They like space and can like toys. They would not make the best pet or first-rabbit, but are by no means aggressive or mean, generally.  I ought to say that silvers are harder to breed than other breeds, but it is not impossible and especially in the spring, some barns are filled with little silver babies.

If you decide to raise silvers, don't be discouraged if you can't find any near you.  They are out there and the more silver breeders we have, the better!  Enjoy your unique and beautiful Sterling Rabbits.
