Description of The Lilac rabbit:

About Lilac Rabbits

                                                                  By Ernest Stoltzfus

The lilac breed is very attractive not only because of their beautiful coat and eyes but also because of their mild, affectionate temperament.  The Lilac coat is thick and soft.  A subtle pink over a medium gray creates a lovely color to behold.  Blue-gray eyes contribute to the rabbits overall attractiveness.  Adult Lilac rabbits range in weight from 5 to 8 pounds.  My breeding tends to favor the heavier examples of the breed.  Once trust has been established, Lilacs love to be stroked over the ears and back.

Lilacs generally are good mothers but their motherhood must be respected.  They will be protective of their newborns and should be given a sufficient amount of privacy after giving birth.  After the babies start coming out of the nest box they can pester the mother to suckle so I provide a top on the nest box to give the doe some relief from her kits.  I let the doe become 9 or 10 months of age before breeding them.  This gives their bodies a chance to mature and they seem to be better mothers if older.  I’m careful, however not to over feed as this may interfere with pregnancy.*

Lilacs enjoy chomping on Timothy hay as a supplement to pellets but not much grain as this may lead to loose stool.

I have a small rabbitry here in western Washington so do need some time or fore warning to prepare to fill an order for rabbits.  Also we do not ship rabbits.
