Description of The Dutch rabbit:

“Going Dutch”

by Megan Gottschalk

a.k.a. Rabbitry, Michigan

Why Dutch?  I remember looking through a book, by Bob Bennett, from my local library at all of the different breeds of rabbits.  I was assigned the task of picking a breed.  The captivating markings of the Dutch are what caught my eye.  Looks are the number one reason I picked this breed.  As I got into this wonderful world of rabbits, I have come to appreciate the many benefits of raising Dutch.

Dutch range from 3 ½ to 5 lbs, though the average is 4 to 4 1/12 lbs.  This is a very versatile size, especially for kids.

Dutch are easy to raise.  Mothers will have anywhere from 4 to 8 babies in one litter.  I once had a doe have 11!  I have had few problems getting does to take and raise their litters.

The Dutch is a pretty hardy breed.  Generally, they seem be a healthy breed.  In my experience, I’ve had minimal issues with diseases and such.

It’s easy to get good quality starter stock.  There are experienced Dutch breeders all over the country, making good Dutch easy to get.

Raising well-marked Dutch is not an exact science.  You can breed two perfectly marked Dutch together and get a whole litter of mismarks.  You can breed two mismarks and get a whole litter of perfectly marked Dutch.  You can breed a doe and a buck once and get a nicely marked litter, breed them again and the litter is mismarked.  The point is that you can’t breed for markings.  But this obstacle is what makes raising Dutch so much fun.

If you can’t breed for markings, how can you breed for a good Dutch?  First, when picking out your breeding stock, you must consider type first.  A good typed Dutch should have the compact type comparable to a Mini Rex or Florida White.  Good type is smooth with full hindquarters and shoulders.  What I look for is a side profile that is a “u” but broader.  The head should be as round as possible.  Fur should be flyback and shiny.  Color will of course, depend on the variety you want.  You will want to talk to an experienced breeder about proper color and what colors you can mix.  Generally color to color (such as black to black) is best.

The most exciting part about raising Dutch is when you get your first litter.  You can immediately go through the babies to see what their markings look like.  If you have all mismarks, it’s not the end of the world.  In most cases, there will be an awesome typed baby in there.  You can take the best typed baby, breed it and then get some nicely marked babies.  In my experience, the mismarks usually throw the best marked babies.

If you have a couple showable babies, you will need to wait to see what their type turns out like.  Showing Dutch isn’t just about markings.  Type is just as important.  But if you start with nicely typed Dutch, you shouldn’t have too much to worry about.

The biggest factor in raising good Dutch is patience.  But there is nothing more rewarding than getting that Best in Show with a rabbit you raised yourself!
