Description of The Skinny Pig Cavy:

A "Skinny Pig" is a variety of the common guinea pig.  This nearly hairless variety was originally bred for laboratory usage, the gene for hairlessness was bred into the species.  However, it soon  became evident that these nearly hairless piggies were quite sociable and loveable.  Many of the early skinny pigs were not healthy and had short lives.  Now the breeders have focused on restoring the genetic structure of the skinny pig and they are healthy and have lifespans similar to other breeds of guinea pigs. The early skinny pigs were all pink or red eyed whites.  So along with restoring the genetic structure, many breeders are working hard to create a range of color, and clean lined patterns. The temperament of the skinny pig can be a little different than "regular" guinea pigs.  Most skinny pigs have very outgoing personalities, maybe it's the lack of hair that makes them bold!

Skinny pigs are born with the coloring that they will have for life, if anything the color usually deepens several weeks after birth.  Since skinny pigs are "nearly" hairless they do have some fur.  Generally the fur is contained to the head and feet, and the fur can come in heavier or fade during hormonal times but generally skinny pigs have all the hair they will within a week of birth.  Skinny pigs generally don't like full body petting, most enjoy head and chin scratching, a nice warm hand on the bum and lots of snuggles!  There is nothing nicer than a warm naked piggy bottom under your chin!

Some people think that skinny pigs require an enormous amount of additional care.  As with all guinea pigs, this can depend on the individual pig's genetic background.  Well-bred skinny pigs have 3 items that require more attention than "regular" guinea pigs.  The consume far more feed, hay and water to maintain hydration and body temperature.  Each skinny pig should have it's own igloo or hidey house to rest in so that no one is left out if they get chilly.  Skinny pigs may require more bathing, as dead skin cells can build up on their backs.

Any guinea pig is a treat to love and care for, but skinny pigs are a delight!
